ECHAMP calls on MEPs to support initiatives in favour of homeopathic and anthroposophic medicinal products

Jul 22, 2019

Two new leaflets from ECHAMP provide Members of the European Parliament with bite-sized information about the sector for homeopathic and anthroposophic medicinal products.

Use of Homeopathy in the European Union’, a user map, makes visible the widespread use of homeopathy in the EU – including 77% of French, 62% of Austrians, 56% of Germans and 33% of Spanish, as well as 69% of Belgian households. It shows how 70% of users or more are satisfied or very satisfied with the outcome.

A Call to Action provides a first briefing for Members of the European Parliament on this sector and calls on them to ‘Support the people’s choice’.

Homeopathy is used in 100 countries around the world and, with anthroposophic medicine, is used in primary and clinical care across Europe, often prescribed alongside other forms of medicine. Currently, over 100 million EU citizens make use of these medicines. Patients choose them because they are safe. 70% of homeopathy users experience improvements in health and a growing body of published clinical studies confirm their real-world effectiveness.

Homeopathic and anthroposophic medicinal products have been safely on the market in Europe for decades. The specific EU legislation for homeopathic medicinal products has deep roots in their broad use in the EU Member States and is based on the EU principles of free trade and freedom of choice. These long-established therapies and their medicinal products have a role to play in the face of major health challenges in the EU. They offer valuable treatment options in support of EU health policy goals on multimorbidity, polypharmacy, chronic diseases and an ageing population. They can contribute to safe and effective strategies to reduce the use of antibiotics.

The new Parliamentary term offers Members of the European Parliament a fresh opportunity to speak out in favour of these medicines in health debates.

David Reckeweg-Lecompte, President of  ECHAMP, calls on MEPs to add their voice to those who advocate the wider availability and use of these products. “We congratulate all MEPs on their election to the new Parliament and call on them to help achieve EU goals by supporting initiatives in favour of homeopathic and anthroposophic medicinal products.”
