Secure reimbursement status for homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine in Switzerland

The Swiss government is proposing to ensure that treatment costs for homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine will continue to be reimbursed by compulsory health insurance on a par with other medical disciplines.

The Swiss government intends to ensure that treatment costs for homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine will continue to be reimbursed by compulsory health insurance on a par with other medical disciplines.

The decision comes as a result of a six-year trial period (2012-17), following the referendum in 2009 at which two thirds of Swiss backed the inclusion of these therapies on the constitutional list of paid health services. The new permanent status would take effect from 1 May 2017 and will apply to homeopathy, anthroposophic medicine, herbal medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. The treatment is only reimbursed if administered by a medical doctor with additional training in the discipline.

The ministry has initiated a consultation process on the proposed modification of the regulations – closing date 30 June 2016.
