Homeopathy is used in 100 countries around the world, making it the third most popular specific complementary medicine after acupuncture and herbal medicine. [1]
Homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine are long-standing traditions in the EU and millions of European citizens choose to use them for their health care. There is significant to high demand for homeopathic and anthroposophic medicinal products in at least two thirds of EU Member States, from Eastern, Central and Western Europe, some with and some without a long-term tradition. [2]
In Europe, awareness of homeopathy remains high and the use of homeopathic medicines is widespread – 79% of French, 60% of Germans, 57% of Italians and 47% of Spanish have used homeopathic medicines in their lifetime. [3]
Satisfaction with this treatment is also high – 90% of German users find homeopathic medicines completely or partly effective, 84% of Spanish users and 81% of Italians declare themselves to be satisfied with the treatment and in France, 73% of those who know about it have confidence in this therapeutic approach. [3]
Recent market data
- 70% of Germans have an open attitude towards homeopathy – over half have tried homeopathy and an additional 16% are open to trying it; [4] homeopathy is the most popular integrative medicine therapy used by parents for their children; [5]
- Seven out of ten French people trust homeopathy with 72% convinced of its benefits for health; four out of five have taken homeopathy at some point in their life and two out of five have been using homeopathy for more than 10 years; [6]
- More than 80% of Italians know of homeopathy and 17% use it at least once a year; 71% of respondents of Campania in South-West Italy had heard about homeopathy and one in five used it at least once a year, and on average had been using it for more than five years; [7]
- Over 60% of Austrians have used complementary medicine, with homeopathy the most popular treatment – four in ten people have used it; [8]
- 46% of Belgian households have used homeopathic medicines and 50% of users have been using these products for more than five years; [9]
- Two thirds of Spanish citizens have heard of homeopathy, although as few as 5% have used it in the past 12 months; [10]
- 80% of the British population are aware of homeopathy, and 15% have used it;[11]
- 91% of respondents in Lithuania are familiar with homeopathy and 66% use homeopathic medicinal products; [12]
- A similarly high number of respondents in Latvia indicated they are familiar with homeopathy, with 63% indicating they use the products. [13]
